Modern warfare 2′s matchmaking can be a little temperamental at times - to say the least. Lag and host migration are the bane of a Modern Warfare 2 gamers life and can take a lot of fun out of the whole experience. Microsoft posted an update on the Xbox Live Operations Blog today to let people know that they’ve been tinkering with things “under the hood” to try and combat that pesky lag.

We’ve opened up the hood on Xbox LIVE and tinkered with how matchmaking works for Modern Warfare 2. It’s not a dramatic change, and the majority of our users won’t see any difference – but a certain subset of you should be happier now.
When you search for a match, our servers sort through the many thousands of available matches to find the “best” potential games for you. We’ve changed how we determine “best”, and your country is now an even more significant factor than it was before. What does this mean to you?
As a gamer, you want to play in a lag-free game. This means that you need to be playing with gamers who are “near you” on the Internet. This is why games like MW2 ping potential matches to determine how close they are and reject them if they’re too far away. If you live somewhere that’s geographically isolated – like Australia, for example – most of the world is not near you. The speed of light just isn’t fast enough (that’s not something I get to say every day).
On behalf of that Australian gamer we’re now trying harder than ever to find a session in their country for them to join. Of course, this requires there to be games hosted in Australia with open slots at the moment they’re looking – but we’ve maximized the odds of those gamers getting together.
While we can’t beat the speed of light (yet), we do think that these changes have made finding matches in MW2 a better experience. If it’s helped you out we’d love to hear it!

i’m from italy and LAG it’s a big big problem for many users… Finally this patch is here…it would need a team of engineers to understand that the best is finding a game near you for a better ping value……

@Brad, I completely agree. It annoys me to no end when they place me in a match that ends within 10 seconds. I don’t mind joining midgame, but that is what bothers me. I don’t know if there is a way to weed that out or not, but if there is, I hope they’ll address that. Also, I do still get some bad lag pretty often and I’m in the middle of North Carolina (US). But oh well. It does seem to be a bit better I guess.

the teams have been a little unfair- every single match i play there’s a team with little kills (1000-5000), or the team with the win. It’s getin kind of annoying.

Blame this on killstreaks. Once they get stacking for one team it leads to more and more killstreaks and the losing team gets camped in and are sitting ducks for winning team.

Ok I’m going to try and give a relevant bit of information to the developers… Yes I personally have noticed a change in the match making system. Is it “better”, not really. Before the change I was constantly getting yellow bar connections and typically laggy games but there was about a 45% chance that I would get a decent connection. Now I get green bared connections a lot more but the connections tends to be just as lagged if not more lagged than before. Now I’d say it’s about a 30% chance that I will get a decent connection but XBL says I have a 4 bar connection. So all in all it appears at first that I have this great connection but after a few moments of playing I tend to see players skipping across the map and getting shot from people, who at one point were not there. BTW I’m currently in Okinawa, Japan using a fiber connection.
To all those people complaining about the PC’s version of the game. Honestly we console gamers could care less about your connections. MODW2 was designed for XBOX and PS3, so why waste time with a second string console? Go play some game that is isolated to the PC only. We don’t have time to worry about PC gamers when XBOX and PS3 players who have been anticipating the release of this games for years are suffering.

It’s nice not to have lag…but what about matchmaking based on skill and playing style? I’m getting really tired getting pwned by level 7+ prestiges! I know you can only get better by playing people better than you, but how does dying every time I take two steps make me better?
