Modern Warfare 2 Banned In Russia
There is a very controversial level in Modern Warfare 2 that caused a bit of a storm when it was leaked before the game was even released. Most of you have already played ‘No Russian’ by now but it’s set in a Russian airport where you’re part of a team of terrorists mowing down innocent civilians.
It turns out that the Russian authorities have not taken kindly to this part of Modern Warfare 2 and decided to recall all copies of the record breaking shooter, effectively banning it.
Infinity Ward has opted to patch the level out entirely for Russian consumers, and an edited version of the game is expected to be re-released in less than a month, pending government approval. Even that may not pass, however, considering the entire game is based around a war between the US and Russian forces.
Russian gamers are apparently very unhappy with the game’s content. One Web site, GotPS3, railed against Infinity Ward for catering to an American audience and ignoring the sensitivities of other cultures. The site believes that Infinity Ward portrays the Russians as terrorists.

Still, I think it is stupid to ban the game anywhere. And there’s a mission here as well! Also don’t think anyone can say ‘we’re the best’ or ‘we have no problems’.
Anyway, it is funny that some are fast to point other’s problems and get all aroused when they’re own are pointed out. One can talk about Russia but cannot hear about the US? Russians and Americans seemto behave exactly the same at that right now. And I must admit, a lot of brazilians would act as stupid as that…

Has nobody realized yet that the Modern Warfare 2 storyline is FICTIONAL?
I have played the “No Russian” level myself, and I will say that I was a little shocked, not because it was “discriminating against Russians,” but because I didn’t think being a part of slaughtering innocent civilians was appropriate for a video game. And, on top of that, everything looks real.
Back to the point… I respect everyone’s opinion, but c’mon… It’s a video game. It’s fiction.

I’m Russian and I thought that level was brutally fun. It’s just a game people stop spazzing out. Nobody is telling anybody else to go shoot up a Russian airport. @Max, Couldn’t agree more. That in itself is not worth a boycott. Modern Warfare 2 is simply a re-skin of COD4, lacks original content and has less features (no console or ded. servers…etc) for MORE MONEY.
Yes the game is good, but nothing like it could’ve been. By charging extra money and locking down features to shift PC gamers onto the more profitable console platform Activision and IW are (arrogantly)shifting the gaming industry for added profit.

Which world do you live in? Of cousre they do it for the money, is that a surprise? Just like the movie and music industry, the gaming industry is just the same. Who can blame them? It’s first and foremost business. I can perfectly understand that Activision/IW are tired of the PC pirates, the whole gaming industry is. Almost all the big titles coming out now are designed for consoles and then ported to the PC. As I recall, the last big FPS exclusive for PC was Crysis, that was 2-3 years ago. The gaming industry is tired of PC pirates, of course they will move on to the consoles when theres a larger profit.There are exceptions though, such as Blizzard. But on the order hand they charge nerds a monthly fee for playing WOW.

Yes, the developers do have a right to put the most work in for consoles if they’re more profitable, but that’s not being kind to the customer, which is what it should be about.

Well, in a fairytale world that would be the main focus of all huge companies, but that’s not the case. Why should IW be kind to PC gamers when they are losing money on all the piracy? IW would most probably not taken that direction if it wasn’t for the case that theres clearly a huge part of the PC community that are pirates. Look at what happened to all the loosers who downloaded the game on the xbox, they got what they deserved. Unfortunatley, IW’s actions punishes both the legit and non legit PC players, if they could only punish the pirates, they would.

That’s clearly something IW had taken account for, before taking such a drastic decision. But the case is, they were already losing a lot of money, ded. servers or not, you can’t fight piracy by being passive.
Robert Bowling has allready stated that the PC community in COD isn’t huge at all, compared to the consoles. By “community” I’m guessing he means the non-pirates.
There were no Prestige or limited/hardened edition for the PC. That alone tells something about how insignificant the PC players are becoming.

I think this is sort of a expirement from Activison/IW. If they see that there are even more pirates this time around, the next step will most probably be not to release games on PC anymore. Don’t be suprised if MW 3 is only released on consoles. Then we will see who shoots themselves in the foot. But then again, this is just guessing from my part, but if I could bet money on my prediction I would. Maybe not with MW3, but definetely in the future, when the PS4 and the new xbox hits the market.

It’a funny because you’re quoting what I say but not actually hearing it.
I was saying MORE people HAVE pirated MW2 because they don’t want it for the multiplayer, just the single player.
Call it losing money because of piracy if you want but the fact is that they still earn money by publishing on the PC, they just don’t put as much effort into porting it.
You got bashed up by PC gamers as a kid didn’t you? You’re liking this ‘punishment’ of PC gamers by the lack of dedicated servers. I hadn’t exactly thought of it as a punishment, but if it were that would just destroy the developer-gamer relationship, because unfairly punishing people should be avoided at all costs.

@Auptyk, It’s all hype basically. I doubt the politicians have played the game. The fundamental difference between a computer game and a book or movie is interactivity. Instead of allowing a story to be told (in a book or movie), the player becomes the character and controls his actions.
It’s obviously a complex subject to explore. My belief is that the lines between different types of media are very blurred, therefore games shouldn’t be judged with greater scrutiny. Good luck trying to convince the older generation that though

@Guy, I agree, the Cold War is very old school, and yes, the invasion of the separatist American puppet-state (Georgia) would of occured if it was a Russian puppet-state on US soil.
What is interesting is how American games always portray themselves as the good guys (obviously it sells). One thing I give Infinity Ward credit for is telling this story from a (slightly more) realistic perspective. That being the “rogue general” and “fun in Afganistan” aspects of the storyline.
Enough with the Russians! Fighting some Korean or Chinese armies could be cool. It’s slightly more believable than the re-hashed Cold War storyline.

I think modern warfare 2 has great multiplayer, but the scene where you gun down innocents not only is boring but distasteful, and plain stupid, in fact the whole campaign is bs. The multiplayer/special ops is what makes the game good. On the first part: There is a difference with cod 1,2,3,5 and 4 and 6.. 1,2,3, and 5 are based on a real war, and I doubt anyone in the world will deny the fact that the leaders of Germany Japan and Italy are the real bad guys in those times.. Of course, there are exceptions (Think about Schindler who saved 100s of people), but you won’t find many people who condone the actions of Hitler, Mussolini, and others.

He pointed out that the pirates often had thousand dollar PCs and were spending $50+ on internet per month so they’re clearly willing to spend money, so therefore it must be a breakdown from the publisher’s end otherwise the customer would probably be willing to pay for it.
But yeah, I think you’re mostly right with what you said there. Not that all pirates are Russian.

i have been in the US infantry for 7 years, and i have been to quite a few different countries to know that nobody is perfect. Everyone regardless of race, creed, religion, gender, or otherwise is innocent. I have my own set of skeletons locked away in my closet, as does everyone else. We as americans are not perfect, but as the ideal place to live for most of the people inhabiting the planet, it’s just a better way to sell to be the “ass-kicking” american bad-ass in the game. No one is saying that the russian special forces cant kick ass, or that the islam jihadists dont everyday kick the **** out of my fellow americans in iraq and iran and afghanistan. Does that make us the good guys? No. In fact, we more often than not are portrayed as the party at fault, do you think for one second that we are the best there is? No, we are unfortunately not, yes we have many good things that others are not so fortunate to have, but yet our economy is collapsing around us. we are on the brink of becoming a 2nd world country. as stateed by others before me, if the americans were the bad guys on the game and we were the russian military and the storyline was reversed i bet the russians wouldnt be *****ing so hard. But, thats not the way the game was made. And by the way people, it is just a game, if there was ever an incident where yes a lone undercover american operative assisted a russian fanatic nationalist to kill innocent civilians, there wouldnt be an overnight invasion, there wouldnt be a few badasses dealing death with no remorse, there would instead be all out panic. anybody ever heard of world war 3? no? oh its this neat little war where we are all screwed thanks to the lovely little inventions of the manhattan project. It’s not portraying Russians as terrorists, its portraying Russian terrorists as terrorists…..
Plus the whole part with Russia (*spoiler) invading the US is entirely for plot.
Also IW isn’t TRYING to offend Russians, it’s offering game play and a story line.

Now if I was loyal to a popular russian-video-game-company that came out with all these cool shooters and then they come out with the most anticipated badass game in the frickin universe and it involves killing my own innocent american friends, I’d be pissed. But its a game. Come on russia! Just take the patch from infinity ward that takes out the level and let your people play Modern Warfare 2!
