Lead character artist on Modern Warfare 2, Joel Emslie, has confirmed that Martydom will make a return in MW2 but it will be “treated differently”.
The Martyrdom perk, as fans of CoD 4 know it, gives players a chance to kill opposing players in a “from the grave” style. With the perk enabled, players will automatically drop a live grenade when they are killed. Many consider the perk “cheap”, as it can often lead to automatic death following close quarters fighting.
He wasn’t able to go into detail but, speaking to VideoGamer, Joel had this to say
“We are very, very aware of the community and what they like and don’t like, and Martyrdom has caught our attention. I’m happy with how the game is.
It’s [Martyrdom] treated differently. And I will say this – it fits in perfectly.”
Some fans have expressed concern that the Riot Shield will unbalance Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer. Emslie, however, denied this.
“There’s always a counter-measure to everything in the game, every element that’s been added and is brand new to multiplayer has been painstakingly tested by us, our own worst critics. We’ve had shouting matches about changes, very passionate heated debates about what works and what doesn’t work.
We would add a new element, go play it, and then people would come storming into [lead multiplayer designer] Todd Alderman’s office to say, “Why did you change this?! What were you even thinking?! I played CoD 4 and this is the way I loved it! Why are you changing it?”. I can guarantee you that the stuff we pushed off to the side and didn’t put in the game would blow you away.”
Here at MW2Blog HQ we think the new Martyrdom will work one of two ways….
- Martyrdom will be a kill streak reward
- You will need to have a grenade in your inventory for it to work (if you threw your grenade prior to dieing Martyrdom won’t work)

I reckon this is going to be a death streak, cos martyrdom in COD4 was meant to help players who struggled, but then got abused by those who don’t (Not at all copied from Robert Bowling). So in MW2 there are death streaks for the same purpose but which can’t be abused. It would make sense that they would then change martyrdom to a death streak so it can actually do what it was designed to do.

If it is a death streak then when you die four times it prolly gives you matrydome for the rest of the match.
Or as someone said up there, it could only drop the grenade when you have a grenade remaining

the pic shown is from COD4 MW….thats why it is green….i think that having it as a death streak is a great idea….i have been killed countless times by martyrdom bc im more of a CQC style player…..so i think it is a good idea to only b able to get it if u…well…suck….

I will only be unlocked for people who have a kill death ratio below a certain amount… It’s not good enough to be a death streak perk, dieing multiple times and getting nothing but a live grenade dropped would be baloney. copycat, for example, is way better than one grenade

either only be able to drop a grenade when you have one already or if you enable the martydom perk it removes whatever your primary grenade is. Or no martydom and 3x frag at the same time

It would be cool if you had to have a grenade when you die and make it a deathstreak so its entirely useless while still having it in the game. It would have been even better if they got rid of it all together.

countless times i’ve killed someone and as i rushed over their dead body the symbol pops up. i don’t have time to back up and throw it away. i cant even avoid by keep running past it. im still worried about deathstreaks being taken advantage of myself

Death streaks are noob buff up, means more challenges for skilled players.
And I think also you’ll need a frag before you die while often noobs throw them away the first seconds they(we?) spawn, and yes, it’s death streak too.

But, Admin. The way Martyrdom is in COD4 is perfect. It doesn’t need any changes. I only use it for “plan B” purposes. For example, if I killed someone, and someone stabs me from behind; he’s dead. Especially if its someone who’s killed you before, is trying to piss you off. Secondly, it counters recurring kills. It counters trash talkers. It counters just about almost anything.
Eliminating it would just throw out any more tactical backups when you die.

Its not them. You’re giving them ideas on what should be done, for example the whole grenade in your disposal turns on martyrdom, but if you don’t have grenade – no martyrdom for you. Which pisses me off.
You guys need to be careful what you say in your little “comments” because IW DOES read blogs, and community feedback.

A) We are intitled to an opinion just as much as you are.
B) Martyrdom is changing whether you like it or not.
C) No matter what you or i say IW decided a long time ago what they are going to do with the game.
D) If you look at the post, we are speculating on what the new perk will/could be. We are not suggesting thats how it should be.
Also, if IW read blogs and community feedback then they should know what the community wants as a whole and that is that Martyrdom is changed or preferably dropped alltogether. My personal opinion is that i don’t mind what they do with the perk!
Do you have a better idea? If so we would love to hear it, a constructive post would be nice.

I think that in MW2 there will be a Martyrdom symbol when the opponent’s blip comes up, just like the Juggernaut perk in COD4 which will give the shooter at least some warning of what is to come.

A quick thought on how juggernaut should work. I think if you are pussy enough to use that **** u should be penalized. Maybe in the way snipers get a gillie suit you are wearing like full ****ing armour which makes sense and as a result it severly cuts down on your mobility. If they do that i dont care i’ll glad mow down some slow jugger****s all day and not twice but THRICE times on sunday you ****ing jugger-NOOBS!!! BTW i use stop power so i make my living on little juggy *****es.
