How To Not Suck With The Riot Shield [GUIDE]
by xRaWr SqUIrrELZ

The Riot Shield in Modern Warfare 2 is a surprising addition to a Call of Duty game. Used well it can rack you up a lot of kills, but more importantly, help your team to get that win.
Riot Shields have more uses than just making a nuisance of yourself or having a laugh in Team Death Match. They are best used in objective game types like Capture the Flag or Sabotage. Riot Shields provide the perfect mobile cover for you, and maybe a team-mate, to sneak up and grab that objective right in front of your enemies faces. When you are heading back with the flag, the Riot Shield can also cover your back. Switch to your secondary and the shield will stop the bullets from the people chasing you hitting your back.
First thing you want is to have a good class for the Riot shield. This is probably the best one right here.
Primary Weapon: Riot Shield
Secondary Weapon: Any shotgun that you like
Equipment: Throwing knife (if you’re good with it) or Blast Shield if not
Special Grenades: Stuns
Perk 1: Marathon
Perk 2: Lightweight
Perk 3: Commando
It’s pretty basic but it works and it’s important to have a class with at least commando because sometimes i see Riot classes with completely random perks it seems like.
Ok now on how to actually use the shield.

1. ALWAYS keep your target in front of you! This sounds obvious but I see so many people who barely even look at the guy shooting at them. A lot of times people will try to run around you and knife you or shoot you. Try to follow their movements as best you can to make sure they can’t get around you. You will get the hang of it eventually, trust me.
2. Always crouch! Unless the person is new to the game or just stupid the first thing they are going to try is to attack your feet. Crouching fixes that problem. It’s good to sprint at them when they are reloading or trying to throw grenades at you as long as you make sure you crouch soon after sprinting for a few seconds because when your target gets ready to shoot again hes gonna screw you over badly if you keep sprinting.
3. Use your equipment. Your equipment is very important. Whether you’re using the Blast Shield or the Throwing Knife it’s important that you know how and when to use them because they can become a factor of life or death on your part.
Throwing Knife: Very useful if you can get good with them. More times than not your target will not expect you to be using these and will be surprised when you kill them with it. The trick to using these is using them at the right time and using them fast. Only use these when your enemy is reloading or throwing a grenade because otherwise you are giving him an easy opening and will probably die. You also have to make sure that you hold your knife for 2 seconds at most. Any longer than that is going to give your target enough time to start shooting at you. Another thing, make sure you actually have a chance to hit your target because if you try to throw it across the map it’s probably going to miss and you’re going to lose your knife. If your target turns around to run away that is the best time to use these things, try not to miss that opportunity. The second they turn around throw it right in their back.
Blast Shield: If you’re not good with the Throwing Knife or you just don’t like it then this is your other equipment option. The Blast Shield makes you more resistant to explosives. A lot of people think that the Blast Shield does nothing. That’s not true and i can remember countless time where this thing has saved me (before i moved over to the throwing knife). The thing with the Blast Shield is that you can’t see your radar when using it so only use it when you’re in the middle of a fight with someone (unless your in Hardcore then hell leave it on the whole game).
4. Take advantage of your enemies! There are way too many people who underestimate the Riot Shield so when they see you using it a lot of times they think “YAY FREE KILL” and run at you like gorillas. When this happens I usually laugh at them and give them the knife to the face or a good Riot Shield beating.
5. Cover your team mates! Where possible you should also use your Riot Shield to cover your team mates. For example, if your team mate is planting the bomb in Search and Destroy or returning the flag in Capture the Flag, give him some cover. You never know where an enemy could pop out from and you will make his job of killing the bomb planter so much more difficult (and the planters job a lot easier). Communicate and work as a team to complete your objective.

6. Ignore annoying people! Trust me at least once a game you will get some pissed off idiot that starts screaming random swears and things like “OMG WHY ARE USING THE RIOT SHIELD YOU FAG?!”. Just laugh at them when at the end of the game they went terribly negative and it was all because of “The Riot Shield fag”.
OK well that’s pretty much it. I covered the basics that you need to know to be a master at Riot shielding. Now remember that all these skills come with practice so it’s not going to come to you just like that. Now go out and pwn some nubs and have fun

@Conman, use a pistol as your secondary (because you can switch to your pistol much faster than to other weapons). If some gorilla sees you and begins to charge for his “easy kill” quick pull out your pistol (I prefer the usp 45 with extended mags) and unload, don’t even aim down sights at close range. This will work more often than not.

i just want to say for another tip on the roit shield class is. When you respawn from a death make sure to switch to your secondary so it can be ready in case you need it. The reason bieng is becuase if you have to use it when you switch to it there will be a 3 second delay becuase it needs to be put off safetey if you will. and that cna mean life or death. i tend to use the roit shield alot to.

Better than a shotgun, in my experience, is a magnum with tactical knife. This weapon is brought up almost instantly, and when mixed with commando is a 5 meter instant kill without aiming. very good against those that waste a clip on the shield and have to reload, or that throw a flash grenade at you. if you wait a moment after the flash goes off, switch and knife, you get them most of the time. with the tactical knife, you can even take down pairs at a time, which is nice.

@magnumPI, I rememboing these before this little guide, but, still I’m glad I’m not the only one who likes the riot shield.
[Reply]
I found that although the shield provides good protection on either the front or the back, it fails to work properly in close combat situations. My Riot Shield class is exactly the same as yours except my secondary weapon is the basic pistol. Reason being is the riot shield takes two hits to kill the enemy. But switching to the pistol and slashing with your melee sword is almost instantaneous. Switching to the shotgun, however, causes too much downtime and greatly increases the failure rate. So far I’ve found that if I can get within melee reaching distance of the target I can switch and slash successfully more than 90% of the time. I have not perfected the throwing knife yet, and hope to do so shortly. Overall, thank you for the tips!

i play hardcore search and destroy (gives you the most xp)and i found a flaw in the riot shield. You can still hit their feet while their crouching. I use a M14 EBR and when ther moving foward the tip of their shoes come out and BAM! I killed him!
[Reply]
Just a tip, if you come up to someone else with a riot shield while you’re using it. Slowly move towards them, until you’re a meter or two away, then sprint and shield bash, even though they have a shield on, 9 times out of 10 this will get them, but you may have to do it a few times
[Reply]
Lag makes the shield pretty hard to use, theres pleny of times when on my screen I was blocking him perfectly and he shoulden’t of been able to hit me but when I watch the killcam he was shooting at my sides because of the connection. I advise you only to use it when the connections are perfect otherwise your just going to get frustrated by getting killed even though you did everything correctly.
I also agree with danielslaughter, unless playing hardcore it’s a bad idea to try and melee them with your shield and your better off using a pistol with a tactical knife as the switch is almost instant and the knife is more reliable.

@Bob the Ball, Yeah that is an issue a lot of times but I seem to be able to deal with that lag pretty well and my connection is usually just average. Also, It’s not a bad idea at all to melee with the Riot Shield. I play core SnD and get at least 5 or 6 kills almost every game(with the exception of having those bad laggy games) with just a pure Riot Shield and a Throwing Knife. I’m a true Riot Shielder, I don’t use secondary weapons
oh yeah and thanks for the Great Feedback guys, I really appreciate it.

@Bob the Ball, I’ll generally use the riot shield if I’m hosting the game so I can get the most out of it. Also, throwing knives are sexy.
[Reply]
I will try to do that, thanks

Great advice! Thanks for posting it!

I find the best secondary is a pistol with tactical knife… even better melee advantage when combined with commando. Very lethal.
Alternatively if you do find you sometimes miss with the throwing knife (Im still improving) use scavenger and you can re-supply knifes and stun grenades which is a great combination with the shield.
[Reply]
i use the same setup but i use blast shield as i commonly find that i get semtex attached to my shield. one way of not being killed if you have semtex on your shield is to swap weapon and have the shield on your back. this has a high failure rate and leaves you open to attacks so i use a blast shield. im quite good with the throwing knife but i usually get killed before i throw it and picking it up is a big burden, and i cant scrimp marathon for scavenger.
also i have usp with tactical knife attachment. this beans that when you find a large group of enemies, you can flash them and switch weapon, run around and jab them all with ur tactical knife. almost like having 2 classes in one.
i agree that lag does have an unfair advantage for the other players and if very annoying that you die because you/they had lag and leaves them feeling pro (not the case)
i wish that you could hit kill players in one hit
im interested to know; has anyone completed the challenges for this. i was stuck on the bullet reflecter one, then i went prestige and lost my progress.
enjoy face-battering
[Reply]
forgot to say in my last post :S
you survive an explosion from a semtex attached to your shield if you have your shield up and blast shield on, i think i mentioned but it wasn’t clear.
also you can remove the stains from your shield by going into video options and disabling bullet impacts. i was very happy when i found this, now my shield always stays shiny clean

I love using the shield in hardcore, i recomend using the Semtex though. I can take anyone else w/ my shield but if they have my old shield or a shield i find it difficult. So just bac up and stick ‘em, when they realise, OH ****! they go boom and as long as i backed up enuf im good.
I also recomend not moving at a shooting target until they are reloading. I do like being in CQC w/ a LMG user and putting them on my left a lil, charging, and waking them right in the face. Nice to have stuns too, stun the rom w/ the headquarter and charge in waking every one. Helps.

I personally like playing against gamers who use the sheild it makes the games alot more fun, especially when they know how to use it well.

Hi im a riot shield user and i found a very efective way to use the riot shield.
First u need this
primary: Riot shield
secondary: M9+tactical knife
(Why tactical knife? well when you chage to secondary is more fast than other secondary’s so thats mean in moments of suspens you can change and kill fast youre oponent)
equipment: blast shield (recomendet) or claymore
i know that you see that is stuped but i use it to put it and i keep going every were some one gona pass throu it XDDD and booom!!!! and for riot shield user oponents or wanabes that try to kill u with ur shield u put it in front of him and like a asshole they run throu it and boom!!! jaja XD try it.
special granades: stun granades( put the oponent more slow so thats means that u have the andvantege )
P1: scavenger
more stun granades very efective try it
P2: ligthweigt
P3:comando pro
gamer tag: kth ur stepdad
my name is urufu not kth thats my friend name but we play in one account

I love using the riot shield/tact. knife combo, it is so much fun in FFA especially when you have your riot shield on your back with your pistol out running around knifing people…
I went from 8-13 to 30-14 in a FFA due to the fact that I’m pro… I mean that riot shields are awesome protection!
Perks:
Perk1 – Marathon Pro (awesome when u have to jump & climb over something, makes you like a horse running the circuit)
Perk2 – Lightweight Pro (pro doesnt do much… but it helps when u are running after someone and catching up, muahaha)
Perk3 – Ninja Pro (I know most of you say that comando pro is the best… but i personally love Ninja because of the fact that they cant hear you sneaking up on them, which gives you an amazing edge over anything)
Special grenades – (Duh) Stun grenades (the only way to go!)
Equipment – Claymore (it comes in handy when there is someone chasing you and you’re low on life and about to die, life saver in short)
Well, tell me your success stories!

Could also add if you want that if you get stuck with a semtex, best option is to run at them so it blows them up too?
[Reply]
I don’t use riot shield that often unless I get bored with my other classes, and it gets fun untill the bullet’s block the screen, I’m soooo happy with what someone posted about taking bullet image off, (thx btw) I use the throwing knife, marathon, lightweight, and commando, and getting the pro for each will really really help, I only got the tact. knife on the 44. but it is not very good when you really need it, thx for all the posts and ideas everyone
[Reply]
I like the tactics on here, they’ve been really useful in helping me get alright with the riot shield. I have a couple of things different though. I use the akimbo glock as secondary amd stopping power. I figured that if I’m going to pull out my weapon, I want to be sure it’s going to kill them. Apart from that it’s really good advice. The author is especcially right on the knife. Most players ee me then empty their entire mag into me. When they go to reload – BAM! – knife kill. thanks squirrel!
[Reply]
@ Nuclearjoe go into options, then video options, then click on advanced options ans there will be bulled impacts. switch it off.
another usefull tip for those who play with a throwing knife is to place a small bit or blue tac on your monitor where your crosshairs are, not too big that it gets in your way but not too small that you have trouble finding it in dark areas of maps. mine is about 2mm squared or so.
i noticed that i killed alot more people with throwing knives since i did this and also i hardly ever miss (unless i have a bit of lag)
this helps greatly when aiming with the throwing knife as you dont have to hold your grenade down to aim, you can do it wilst you deflect bullets
seriously you should do this tho i love it
also i reccommend having your equipment button set to a mouse scroll down unlike middle mouse button where its hard to quickly press it. with the mouse scroll down you can throw your knife and have your shield up as quickly as possible. have it as both mouse scroll down and middle mouse like me if you like means you can still cook grenades and stuff
hope this helps

Thanks for the tips, author and others. The best advice comes in the last paragraph. Practice!
I like to play domination and always thought that we need a guy that knows how to use the shield and is willing to forgo getting a respectable kill count, so I decided to give it a go. If you really care about your K/D ratio, then this is probably not for you. I usually had more than 20 deaths and less than 10 kills.
My experiences: (I play solo, so any support I got came at the discretion of random teammates)
I started by following guys around and then dropping down in front of them to block bullets and grenades. This gave us a little more time to get the capture completed and got the guys used to the idea that they had a support player in the game. After a few games I started getting calls to support in taking bases and/or teammates waiting until I arrived on station before following me in. On my last game of the night we had one other dedicated shield on the team and several others carrying a shield. At one point we took a base with 4 shields! I was getting 8 to 10 kills with the throwing knife and enemies almost always backed away when encountered outside of bases. Many times they just turned and ran away.
@rouge beef. The little dot in the center of the screen is pure genius. Not only does this tell me where to throw the knife, but it tells me where the center of my shield is so that I can point it at the threat and we know how important it is to be pointing straight at the shooter or grenade. Point that dot at a thrown grenade and you will usually survive. It also helps me know where the center of the crosshairs are for any weapon and when EMPed, I can still use my electronic sites accurately. Awesome.
I suck with the shotgun so swapped it out with a stinger or javelin. This is a great combination with scavenger. It sucked to give up marathon, but unlimited knives and missiles is a pretty good tradeoff.

riot shield is the best if u crouch in a corner and wait for and opponent to come to u and well he/she are reloading u throw a knife at them and u can use sticky grenades if the go behind a wall when there reloading
And if u come up upon a shield vs shield then u walk back and wait for them to attack if they miss then hit the and hit them 1 more time to finish them
PS Shield are the best for those annoying last stand perks
[Reply]
thank u for the advice
[Reply]
I prefer the blast shield because the first thing your enemy will try to do is either noob tube you or throw a grenade. All of these events I have diverted with the blast shield
[Reply]
You can also use the C4 as equipment, instead of stuns or flashbangs. Usually when other players see someone using the shield, they sprint towards you and try to shoot or knife you. If you quickly throw a C4 in front of you and detonate it, you’ve got yourself a kill. When using the perk ‘Danger Close’, your explosives do more damage, but you will have to trade the perk ‘Lightweight’ for it. When you camp using the shield, you can just throw a C4 in a doorway or narrow hall, so when somebody rushes towards you, just detonate it and you’ve got another kill. I tried both the throwing knife and C4 and i prefer the last one. I don’t master the throwing knife, however, so that may be the reason. I would say, just try both and see what you like best. Excuses for my English, but I’m a Dutch Modern Warfare 2 player
My account is named ‘Me-Hippo’ and I play on the PS3
Thanks for the tips, btw

Sorry, I said you can also use C4 as equipment, instead of stuns and flashbangs, but obviously I mean throwing knife or blast shield
[Reply]
When you have a throwing knife your shiled is down for half a sec so when they see it down they shoot and hits the shiled and BAM knifed
You need to be quick to get your target because heres the 3 things your attacker could do
#1-Go around you and shoot or aim at feet(20% success rate 50%)
#2-Leave you alone and just ignore cause you cant get well at a range(85% success rate 45% if you follow)
#3-If they have riot shild RIOT BATTLE!!!(see bellow)(50% success rate 25% if help comes for them 75% for you)
A riot shiled battle is basicly two peaple with riot shileds meet you each attack and if timed corectly you can get after they attack by swerveing around because they cant while they attack or you might even be able to drop a claymore if ya got one
[Reply]
I barely started using the Riot Shield tonight cause I saw promise in using the first time I tried it out…Now, it’s my favorite primary weapon! I got my longest killstreak using the shield and it’s so simple! (Not always) Just sprint through open spaces, crouch indoors, and melee away.
The only time using the Riot Shield sucks is when you run into two or more enemies at once…taking care of two at a time can be done, but any more than that and you’re dead meat.
[Reply]
couple more things:
- you’re shield is right handed and whilst crouching your bum sticks out to the left of you so make sure you look to the left slightly of the thermal nub aiming for your arse (english spelling)
- with regard to throwing knives, the main issue is the lack of reticules as the other guy will usually saunter around infront of you racking their somewhat empty brain looking for a means to get past you he isn’t a hard target to hit. Try a very small amount of bluetak on the screen (usefull for HC and spray aswell) this should enable more accurate knife throwing.
happy hunting.

nice tips guys, i myself am a knife thrower, i find a lot of times people will run straight at you when you are crouching and going for them, and when their spriting it takes time for them to aim and shoot so thats when i toss the knife. but i may try the bomb shield thing cuz lots of times i get stuck with the dang semtex, couple of times i get lucky and theres a weapon below where i drop my shield for whatever gun it is and run away.
another fun thing to do, if you with a fellow riot buddy, and someone harasses you for useing the shield, and the next game he’s on your team, you and your buddy follow him around till he goes into a corner of some sort and you trap him, dont let him out. can be soo funny at times, you will most likely be killed but it is worth the laughs, here is a youtube video of it.

@admin and moratu,
You guys must not surf the web a whole lot, “learn2[verb]” and even “lrn2[verb]” are frequently used to add sarcasm or snideness to a comment. It’s used a LOT on 4chan (if you know what that is). And if you’re going pick on my “learn2use”, I’m going to pick on your use of the word “gonna”, which technically isn’t even a word.
Additionally, I don’t see how my sentence was horrid or incomplete. It had a subject and a verb and all that jazz.
But you do have a point- I should have been a bit kinder in my critique, and I apologize. I wrote that at 3 in the morning, so I was cranky. Overall, it WAS insightful but I just get upset easily when I’m tired. I actually started using the Shiel+Knife technique… I think that it’s the most fun you can EVER have on this game. xD

1.To get kills with it play on any hardcore mode with a blast shield.
-On hardcore it is a one hit kill
-If someone does stick you then just pop on the blast shield and get close,it will kill them and you will survive.
2.It’s ok to camp.
3.Use teamwork, if you are playing with a friend then get him in a corner with you.
-If he hides behind you and only stands when people come in you will both be invincible.
-Most likely is someone walks in they will shoot you first and your friend can kill them, depending on what game mode you will most likely get the same amout of xp as if you had killed him because of the crowd control xp bonus. Works best on objective based game such as HQ or domination.
4.If people get mad its good.
-People play worse when they get angry
-if they start yelling just mute them
-they will do worse and you will do better.
Using these stratagies me and one of my friends both went 32-0 on Hardcore Ricocet HQ pro
Hope it helps

I actually have a few different Riot Shield set-ups, as to constantly mind%*^& the enemy.
Scavenger, Danger Close, and Sit-rep w/claymores, and RPG/thumper and stun or smoke grenades (if you claymore an entrance that is getting plenty of action and throw a smoke grenade… well its pretty funny)
I use this most often when I am playing alone, and making sure you are visible from the doorway is a good way to get exp from deflecting bullets, and perfect distraction for your enemy to slow down so he doesn’t run threw the claymore, while letting you watch him get blown up.
Alternatively, Marathon, Stopping Power, steady aim w/akimbo magnums. You whip out your pistols pretty damn fast, and they do some damage.
I suppose I am not a “pure” riot shielder and mainly use it as distraction, but oh well.
