2500 Modern Warfare 2 Cheaters Banned From Steam
Despite the VAC antic-cheat system being used on the PC version of Modern Warfare 2, cheating is still prevalent in multiplayer matches. There’s good news for the honest players out there though…. steps are being taken to rid the game of the hackers / cheaters.
In a tweet by Infinity Ward’s creative strategist, Robert Bowling, he confirms that around 2500 known cheaters will be banned from Steam (the MP matchmaking system), rendering their games multiplayer-less. The tweet came in reply to a frustrated fan who had this to say to the Infinity Ward front-man.

He also posted video proof of the cheaters which you can catch after the break.
Bowling’s response confirms that a fix is on the way and 2500 known cheaters will be banned today.
Such cheats are limited to the PC version of the game and it is unlikely the equivalent is going to happen on the console versions. That is unless someone figures out how to introduce them on a pirated copy and get that version connected in a live game. The odds are against such a scenario, but you never know. Thankfully with both Xbox 360 and PS3 accepting updates when online it would be easily patched anyway.
Infinity Ward does need to keep on top of cheaters because it just completely spoils the game for all the other players trying to do well without cheating. It will be interesting to see if lifetime bans are imposed or whether they opt for a cooling off period of a few weeks or months.
Whatever happens, there are going to be 2,500 very angry gamers tomorrow morning who probably intended to spend the whole of the weekend playing MW2 online. There’s a virtual cookie for the first link in the comments below to a naive cheater posting on a MW2 forum about having trouble getting online tomorrow.

Bloody Robert Bowling. Yet again he demonstrates a lack of fundamental undetstanding. What about the cheaters (presumably most of them) playing on hacked steam accounts? Pernamently banned a user from steam simply means they have to re-create another fake account.

@JohnnyBravo, They’ll just keep getting banned. They’re welcome to make another account, but they’ll lose their rank and progress, so it’s really a moot point to keep making accounts just to get banned again.

@JohnnyBravo, You’re MW2 is tied directly in with your steam account. Along with all other steam powered games you purchase. Get your steam ID banned, say goodbye to your gaming unless you wanna buy another copy.

@Probabillity, CD keys, we are talking about the PC version here, not console so when you use your CD key to bind your game to your account that key cant be used on a new steam account.

You are so right about the lag switch cheats – they are the most common cheats out there and I have got to say I hate them. I have taken to just leaving any game I see one of them working – they disappear just as you are killing them or use it to tear across the map unseen. If the game starts to behave erratically or it searches for a new host every two mins then either report the player if you can or just leave. It is getting very hard to find an honest game any more because of these people. They should have their boxes mac addresses banned from xbox LIVE entirely.

I’m surprised this blog hasn’t reported on the infinite care package glitch. This glitch is getting out of hand much like cheating is. I was playing a game today and some guy on the other team was using the glitch and it was impossible to play. There was constantly a harrier, pave lows, helis, AC130s, predators at every moment – it made it impossible to play.

“Bridge connections” or “Lagg switches” need to be fixed on the 360.
Its really annoying when you are abut to kill someone and the nerd with the lagg switch turns it on and we all lagg and he kills us all. Insanly annoying in Hardcore S&D.

I didn’t ever think Valve would act quickly on banning hackers but I would like valve to step it up. I’m going to start recording in game hackers with xfire since this may speed up process. I have seen some guys try to police it by team killing hacker but at some point that isn’t worth the time or effort. I’m not sure how many from Activision play the pc version but man it would be nice to see more support. The IWNET connection lost or unable to connect host gets old fast as well.

Steam are a crock of $hit3… I am one of the innocent ones that does not cheat and one day I go to login to my game and “!!!Cheat Detected!!!” WTF why have I been banned…god knows… I am trying to get steam to unlock my account because I haev done nothing and they will not do anything about it! Why steam will you not do anything about this. Steam has sold $1,000,000,000 or more worth of these games and are banning $250,000 worth of those at a time and telling those users to go and buy a new copy. Revenue raising B@stards! so in fact Steam is not stopping those cheaters they are just telling them to go and buy a new copy so they can cheat some more and get banned again. oh too bad we just made some more money off you but you can go and buy another copy if you want. All I am saying is that I aprove of the anti cheat system but why are permanent bans being applied for first offence this is rediculous. especially if you have not done anything. it even says on thier VAC FAQ page that hackers cause other players to be banned. so beware players if you are playing with a hacker YOU MAY BE BANNED. I think that they should impose a 3 strikes your out system and warn users if there is some sort of cheat being deteced so that the innocent people have a chance to do some thing about it.

This plan backfires easily. For example, my friend bought MW2 and played it for 3 hours and got banned. He didn’t hack: in fact he was at the bottom 3 of the current map most of the time. f**king ludicrous.

OK seriously make a part in the game where cheaters can play agains cheaters they did that with css and so far there really arent any cheaters play8ing on regualar servers. I totally agree with putting a stop to the cheaters. But sometimes you are wrong! Like in the case of my son.
He does not use cheats! He never has! He was banned! He thinks it was because he used the program xpadder.exe, so he would be able to use a controller with Modern Warfare 2. Well, that dosen\’t sound like a cheat to me & if you consider it to be a cheat, you need to take another look!
Using xpadder.exe doesen’t give him any unfair advantage! He is using a Xbox 360 controller with the
program xpadder.exe for his PC. The controller is used on the Xbox 360 version of MW2!
It is not consider a cheat there and it should not be consider a cheat when used with the PC version.
I have vested alot of money, in order for him to be able to play MW2, on his PC!
Please take another look at his account! I understand you are not responsable for other players
hacking into my son’s system, but I can assure you this is not the case. We have the best Nortons
protection money can buy.

Well I got banned today. I guess all cheaters would say this, but I wouldn’t even know how to start cheating even if I wanted to! So I now have a game that I payed good cash for and for reasons beyond my control I have been kicked from playing in multiplayer mode – and furthermore there’s apparently nothing I can do to get reinstated. Come on, that just can’t be right surely?
